Local SEO in Bangladesh: A Step-by-Step Guide to Ranking on Google
A client asked me last month, "How do I get on the first page of Google?" I said, "Well, what are you doing right now?" He said, "Nothing. I thought you just pay Google."
That is the state of SEO awareness in Bangladesh. And honestly? It is a massive opportunity for anyone willing to put in even basic effort.
Less than 15% of Bangladeshi businesses have a Google Business Profile. Let that sink in. If you set one up this afternoon and spend a couple of hours optimising it, you are already in the top 15% of your market.
Start with Google Business Profile. Seriously, just do this.
I am going to be blunt: if you only do ONE thing from this entire article, let it be this.
Go to business.google.com. Claim your business. Fill in every field — name, address, phone, website, hours, category. Add 10+ real photos of your office, your team, your products.
Do not skip the description. Write something real. Not "We are the best company in Bangladesh" — nobody believes that. Write what you actually do: "We build websites and run SEO campaigns for Bangladeshi businesses. Based in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Been at it since 2020."
Verify your listing. Phone verification is fastest — takes minutes. Postcard takes weeks and sometimes gets lost (classic Bangladesh Post experience).
That is it. You will start showing up in Google Maps within days.
The NAP thing nobody talks about
NAP = Name, Address, Phone number. Boring? Yes. Important? Extremely.
Google is paranoid about fake businesses. So it cross-checks your details across the internet. If your Facebook says "Road 12, Dhanmondi" but your website says "Rd-12, Dhanmandi" (notice the typo), Google gets suspicious. Different phone number formats? Same problem.
Go through every place your business is listed — website footer, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yellow Pages, BD Trade — and make them all identical. Copy-paste identical. Same spelling, same format, same phone number with country code.
Tedious? Yes. But I have seen businesses jump 10+ positions in local search just by fixing NAP inconsistencies.
Your website needs to say WHERE you are
This sounds obvious, but I audit Bangladeshi business websites every week, and most of them never mention their city on their main pages.
Your homepage title should not be "Our Services." It should be "Web Development Services in Dhaka." Your about page should not just say "We are a team of professionals." It should say "We are a Dhaka-based team..."
Google cannot read your mind. If you do not put "Dhaka" or "Chittagong" or "Sylhet" on your pages, Google does not know you are there. And it will not show you in local results.
Quick wins:
- Put your city in your page titles:
Custom Website Development in Dhaka | Webgen - Mention your area naturally in your page content — not stuffed awkwardly, just mentioned where it makes sense
- Write location-specific blog posts. Something like "Why Gulshan Restaurants Need Better Websites" targets a local query AND shows Google you know the area
Reviews: the cheat code nobody uses
How many Google reviews does your business have? If the answer is zero (or single digits), you are missing the easiest ranking boost available.
Here is the thing — most Bangladeshi businesses have NO Google reviews. So if you collect even 10 genuine reviews, you will likely outrank competitors who have been around longer but never bothered.
The trick is making it effortless for your customers. After a project wraps or a sale closes, send them a WhatsApp message: "Hey, really enjoyed working with you! Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? Here is the link: [direct link to your review page]"
That is it. No essay required. Even a one-line "Good service, would recommend" moves the needle.
One thing I will say: do NOT buy fake reviews. Google's detection is getting better, and getting caught means your listing can be suspended entirely. Not worth the risk.
Backlinks from Bangladeshi sites
"Backlinks" just means other websites linking to yours. Google sees each link as a vote of confidence. The more reputable sites link to you, the higher you rank.
For Bangladeshi businesses, the easiest backlinks come from places you are probably already associated with:
- Chamber of Commerce: DCCI, CCCI members usually get listed on the chamber website. Check if yours links to your site. If not, ask them to add it.
- Industry bodies: BASIS, e-CAB, BGMEA — same deal. If you are a member, your website should be on their directory.
- University tie-ups: If you sponsor events or offer internships, university websites often list sponsors with links.
- Local news: Did you launch a new product? Hire a team? Win a contract? Reach out to local business blogs or news sites. A short mention with a link to your website goes a long way.
You do not need hundreds of backlinks. Five to ten from relevant, Bangladeshi websites will make a noticeable difference.
The technical stuff (keep it simple)
I am not going to bore you with a 20-point technical SEO checklist. Here are the four things that actually matter for a Bangladeshi business website:
- Make sure your site works on mobile. Test it at Google's test tool. Fix anything it flags.
- Page speed under 3 seconds. Run PageSpeed Insights. The biggest wins are usually image compression and removing unused JavaScript. If your developer cannot do this, find one who can.
- HTTPS (the padlock icon). Free via Let's Encrypt on most Bangladeshi hosting. No excuse not to have it.
- Submit a sitemap to Google Search Console. This tells Google exactly which pages you want indexed. Takes 5 minutes.
That is the 80/20. These four things cover most of the technical SEO that matters for a local business.
How long until you see results?
Honest answer: 6–12 weeks for noticeable improvement. Not overnight. Anyone who promises you page-one rankings in a week is lying — or doing something that will get you penalised later.
Here is what a typical timeline looks like for our clients:
- Week 1–2: Google Business Profile goes live, you start appearing in Maps searches
- Week 3–4: On-page changes get indexed, search impressions start climbing
- Week 6–8: Reviews accumulate, you start cracking the local 3-pack (the map results at the top of Google)
- Week 8–12: Organic traffic from local keywords grows steadily. You start getting calls from people who found you "on Google"
The best part? Unlike ads, this traffic does not stop when you stop paying. It compounds.
The bottom line
Local SEO in Bangladesh is basically a wide-open field. The bar is incredibly low because so few businesses are doing anything at all. A Google Business Profile, a properly optimised website, a handful of reviews, and a few local backlinks — that is genuinely all it takes to outrank most of your competition.
The businesses that win are simply the ones that start.
